Department of Biblical Theology and Religion History

The research fields of our department include Biblical theology, History of the Biblical age, general and Biblical religion history and post-Biblical Jewish literature. The relationships between Israel and the surrounding people, and the ancient Jewish and Roman writing of history are in the focus of research. The colleagues of the department regularly publish papers analysing exegetic issues and practice oriented exegeses together with educational Biblical papers as well. Besides the department the Sepphoris Research Institute is operated that was established in order to help Biblical (Palestine) archaeology and post-Biblical Jewish literature research. Considering education our courses are studied by students in religious training programmes throughout their training. Some basic and introductory courses of Biblical studies are also given to non-religious training programmes (e.g. primary school teacher training). In religious trainings Bible knowledge, history of the Biblical age, religion history, Old and New Testament Bible theology and further specialization specific courses are taught (e.g. Law and ethics in the Holy Scripture). In the programme of making the Debrecen Reformed Theological University more international an English course entitled “History and Culture of the Biblical World” is given in each spring.
